Zahra Awani

Barking Riverside resident since 2020

Resident Steering Group Member of Thames Ward Community Project and Member of the TWCP Skills & Enterprise Citizen Action Group

After working in corporate marketing for 10 years, Zahra was looking for a more fulfilling role to help make a positive impact on those around her. She found losing her job due to the pandemic the perfect opportunity to search for this. Zahra soon found a job as Communications & Admin Lead for Church At Barking Riverside. It was here that her love for writing and community work was reignited and she became more involved in her community, being an ever developing estate with a plethora of people of all ages, faith, creed and colour but so passionate in many ways. She first came into contact with TWCP after being asked to write an article for The RiverView (then Riverside News) and became part of the Resident Editorial Board for the newspaper in 2021.

Zahra is passionate about everyone across the estate and in the wider borough having a platform to be heard and is usually the first to practice this herself and tries to help empower others to do the same. Whether that be through direct communications with the powers that be on the estate to drive change, being a part of the Barking Reach Residents Association and now being a part of TWCP and The RiverView.

Zahra’s goal for the Ward is for everyone to feel they have a place to have their say and speak their truth. Having a young family, Zahra hopes this is the area her daughter and those of the next generation can thrive in a safe environment.
